Southern Right Whale - Eubalena australis

Southern Right Whales were originally named by the whalers because they were the "right" whales to kill. They were slow, lived close to shore, easy to approach, floated when killed and provided large amounts of oil, meat and whalebone. The Southern Right Whale has been protected since 1937 and is showing signs of recovery from being nearly wiped out to extinction. The Northern Right Whale is not doing well with only 300 left in the Atlantic Ocean.
