PARTNERS

The Ocean Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation of whales and the ocean environment through research and education. To support our mission, we rely on the generosity of many corporations, foundations and organizations as well as individuals.

RESEARCH

Research is crucial for implementing appropriate policies and actions to conserve whales and educate people about them.

  • Benign Research
A hallmark of OA's long-term survey program has been the continual development of benign research techniques now utilized by marine biologists worldwide.
  • Right Whale Program
The right whale is the most endangered of all great whales. Institute researchers, led by Dr Payne, have studied the world's largest population of right whales (2,000 individuals) on their Argentine calving grounds for the past 32 years.
  • Voyage of the Odyssey
The Voyage of the Odyssey is unique because in our work throughout the world we will use the same methods for collecting data and analyzing results.

EDUCATION

The first step to conserving whales must be the education of people - particularly young people - about the importance of whales to this planet. The web site enables us to bring you the latest news, research findings, and information on whales and their conservation.

  • Voyage of the Odyssey website hosted by PBS
The Voyage of the Odyssey website has been designed to be an interactive, educational adventure, allowing people all around the world to follow this amazing five-year journey via the Internet. Visitors to the website can follow the research vessel RV Odyssey as it circumnavigates the globe
  • Class from the Sea
Your class or school can talk to scientists, researchers and crew of the Odyssey via telephone or videophone.
  • Voyage of the Odyssey - Ocean Encounters
The 'Ocean encounters' program is an interactive multimedia program designed to bring the study of whales and the ocean environment, scientific research and marine conservation issues to students and the public. It takes the best educational content from the PBS - Voyage of the Odyssey website, and presents it in a high resolution format for an educator to playback via a DVD disc on a television, computer or LCD projector.
  • Pacific Life Whale Kit
With the generous help of the Pacific Life Foundation (LINK), in 1999 the Ocean Alliance published the WHALE Education Curriculum Guide and accompanying Kit. The kit was honored with a Parent's Choice Award in 1999. The WHALE Education Kit is a multimedia, thematically based, hands-on education program designed to develop in students a comprehensive appreciation for whales, science and the ocean environment.
  • Internships

  • Whale Stories
These stories are taken from the audio CD 'Deep Voices' produced by Dr. Roger Payne: recordings of humpback, blue, and right whales .
  • Questions & Resources
Ocean Alliance maintains libraries of information spanning back to the 1960's. There is a humpback vocalization library with more than 6000 hours of original recordings, books about whales and issues threatening whales and their environment, a video collection about whales and other marine creatures, and a vast directory of publications about whale research around the world.
  • Lectures
Ocean Alliance staff offer interesting multimedia presentations about the organization, historical whale research, current research programs, whale biology, and toxicological and environmental issues. Lecture prices are based on locations, level of expertise, and general logistics
  • Documentaries
The Ocean Alliance has contributed to a number of education documentary films and television shows. Find our more.
  • Cetacean Education Through Awareness (CETA)
In 1993 the Ocean Alliance affiliated itself with Cape Ann Whale Watch of Gloucester (www.caww.com) Massachusetts whereby Ocean Alliance provides Cape Ann Whale Watch with naturalist training and educational programs.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (F.A.Q.)

Do you have any questions pertaining to this website or the programs of the Ocean Alliance? Find out answers in the FAQ section.

WHALE CONSERVATION INSTITUTE

The Whale Conservation Institute (WCI) was founded in 1971 by Roger Payne to protect whales and their ocean environment through scientific research and education. Dr. Payne has conducted research on whales in all the oceans of the world, and for the past three decades has been an eloquent spokesman for whales and their welfare.

  • Objective
WCI's mission and overall objective is to protect whales and the oceans they live in. The Whale Conservation Institute is uniquely positioned to meet this objective.
  • Right Whale Program
Right whales are the most endangered of the great whales. They were hunted by whalers so mercilessly that even after 60 years of protection they are rarely seen in the North Pacific and the population of 300 whales in the North Atlantic appears to be going extinct. For centuries whalers called them the "right whale to kill" because their baleen was worth a fortune and they swim slowly and have such thick blubber that they float when dead.
  • Research
The Whale Conseration Institute uses many benign techniques when researching whales in their two main programs, the Right Whale Program and the Voyage of the Odyssey.
  • Conservation
Conservation of whales through research and education is the key objective of the Whale Conservation Institute.
  • Cape Ann Whale Watch
The Ocean Alliance and Cape Ann Whale Watch began combining education efforts in 1993. Since that time, the program has worked to educate more than 200,000 passengers about whales and the marine environment, outside of Boston, Massachusetts.

VOYAGE OF THE ODYSSEY

The Ocean Alliance's Voyage of the Odyssey is a five-year global expedition that will gather the first ever baseline data on the levels of synthetic contaminants throughout the world's oceans.

  • Mission
Using sophisticated scientific equipment and methodologies, the crew of the Odyssey embarked on a five-year global study of the world's oceans.
  • Research Vessel Odyssey
The RV Odyssey is a ninety-three foot boat which the Ocean Alliance uses for field research.
  • Scientific Research Program
The Voyage of the Odyssey is unique because in our work throughout the world we will use the same methods for collecting data and analyzing results. This will make it possible for the first time to draw comparisons between contaminant loads throughout the world's oceans - giving us the first truly comprehensive worldwide assessment of the ecotoxicological risks facing humans and other animals that depend on the marine environment for food.
  • Conservation
Conservation of whales through research and education is the key objective of the Ocean Alliance.
