Victoria Rowntree - Senior Scientist
Victoria Rowntree is a co-founder of the Ocean Alliance and
director of the Right Whale Program. Before Joining Ocean Alliance she
curated wasps for Howard Evans at Harvard's Museum of Comparative
Zoology and assisted C. Richard Taylor in experiments on the
energetics of animal locomotion and thermoregulation at Harvard's
Concord Field Station. Vicky joined Roger Payne's laboratory
in 1976 and has worked on all aspects of right whale data
collection and analysis. In addition to right whale research
she has conducted studies on the relationship between cyamids
(whale ectoparasites) and their whale hosts, worked in the
field studying the effects of the sounds of oil drilling and
exploration on gray and humpback whales as well as laboratory
analyses of similar studies on bowhead whales. Recent field
work has involved documenting the effect of gull harassment
on the right whales at Peninsula Valdes. Her specific interests
lie in understanding the social behavior of right whales and
more particularly the social interactions of mothers on the
nursery ground.
