Ocean Alliance CEO receives honorary Doctor of Humane Letters

Ocean Alliance CEO Iain Kerr received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from scientific partner University of Southern Maine (USM) on Saturday, May 16th in recognition of his efforts over the last 20 years to support rigorous scientific research that not only creates new knowledge but improves the public’s understanding of our environment and the need to conserve it.

Whale Recordings Leave Our Solar System

In the late 60’s Roger Payne with associate Scott McVay discovered that whales sing songs. These recording have now left our solar system as part of the payload of the Voyager I and II spacecraft!

The heart of a blue whale may weigh 4 thousand pounds (2 tons) and can pump about 60 gallons with each beat. The heart valves are about the size of a standard hubcap.
