Session 5:
Live Videoconference
The route taken by the Odyssey in Sri Lankan waters will be mapped out by Cynde and brought to class. The young scientists will find out how accurate they were in predicting where the whales would be found. The students will be given the opportunity to talk directly with the crew and scientists onboard the Odyssey. This will be a great starting point for the videoconference with the Odyssey crew.
Hand-outs
- Certificate for becoming part of Odyssey's "Young Scientist" Research Team.
Topics Covered in Class
- Did the students find the whales?
- Questions from the students for Odyssey crew.
- Threats whales face and what students can do about them.
In-class Activities
- Did the students find whales? Cynde will bring in the actual route and whale sightings of the Odyssey from the previous two weeks, obtained from our Logger 2000 database.
The teams will be able to compare their routes to the actual route of the Odyssey, and see how their investigation panned out.
- Live video/telephone conference with Odyssey crew. Students will ask the Odyssey crew questions via a live that will last at least 30 minutes.
- During the last 15 minutes of the live linkup, the crew will talk with the students about the threats whales face as a result of human impacts on the marine environment.
The crew will discuss what the students can do to help make a difference in protecting whales and the oceans.
