Session 4:
"Where are the Whales?"

Using a map of Sri Lanka, students will plot a route plan based on research and the information they have learned in class. This is where the team thinks the Odyssey crew will find whales. The Odyssey will be halfway through the research leg at this point. Students will receive a response from the crew to last week's suggestion. This information will assist in developing and modifying the teams' route plans.

Topics Covered in Class

  • The students route plans
  • Answers from Odyssey crew

In-class Activities

  • Students will break into their teams of three, and plot on a map of Sri Lanka (that either the teacher or Cynde will provide) where they will find whales, and what course they should take.
  • After 20-30 minutes, we will come together as a class to discuss the findings of our groups and either plot one main map, overlay the different teams' maps, or somehow discuss the activity as a group. (Note: This should be left to the discretion of the teacher.)
  • The teams' route plans will be digitized and emailed to the Odyssey at the end of the class. Where possible, the Odyssey will follow the students' routes and provide feedback during the live video/telephone conference next session.
  • At the end of class, we will do a ten minute telephone conversation with the Odyssey crew so that students can ask questions about the Odyssey crew's responses.

Homework (Research)

  • Students will read more logs covering a variety of topics.
  • Students will write down one or two questions to ask the Odyssey crew during the upcoming video/telephone conference.

Odyssey logs arranged by categories

These logs were chosen to give students an overview of the various topics discussed by the Odyssey crew and scientists as they sail around the equatorial waters of the globe researching whales.
